UK PLANS TO BOOST OFFSHORE WIND PROJECTS WITH NEW CFD REFORMS!

UK government has launched a consultation on proposed changes to this year’s AR7 Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction, aimed at speeding up the deployment of offshore wind projects. These reforms are essential in helping the UK achieve its clean energy goals by 2030, reinforcing the country’s commitment to expanding renewable energy sources.

Among the suggested reforms are a ‘relaxation’ of planning consent requirements for fixed bottom offshore wind projects, revision of how offshore wind budgets are determined and disclosed, ensuring investment is allocated more effectively, and an extensions of contract terms beyond the current 15 years, enhancing cost effectiveness for renewable energy projects. 

The CfD is the UK’s main tool for promoting low-carbon electricity generation, shielding developers from market volatility and encouraging investments in renewables. 
Eligible developers can bid for CfD contract through a sealed auction process, competing for government-backed support. 

Six allocation rounds have already taken place, allowing various funding to be secured. The recent AR6 set a record for 128 renewable energy contracts being awarded, with a combined capacity of 9.6GW.

The proposals will also cover additional measures, such as allowing repowering of onshore wind farms, expanding phased CfDs to floating offshore wind, and extending the target commissioning window for solar projects from three to six months.

This consultation is part of the government’s broader push to expand clean energy and boost economic growth.
As part of these efforts, officials have also introduced the Clean Industry Bonus, an initiative designed to encourage offshore wind developers to adopt cleaner supply chains while creating jobs in industrial regions.

Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband said: “Last year, we celebrated delivering the most successful auction round in history – now we want to go even further. British families and businesses are bearing the cost of the reliance on petrostates and dictators who set the price of gas on the global market. Our bold new reforms will give developers the certainty they need to build clean energy in the UK, supporting our mission to become a clean energy superpower and bring down bills for good.”

The consultation on CfD reforms remains open for public input until March 21, with the government expected to issue a response ahead of the AR7 auction round.

Project Engineer - HVDC O&M

Our client are looking to hire on a contract basis a O&M HVDC Project Engineer up until OFTO handover and closeout. This role shall sit within the HVDC O&M team and work closely with the HVDC Operations Engineer and HVDC Preventative Maintenance Engineer. This role be responsible for the reactive maintenance, warranty management and performance monitoring relating to the onshore collector substation, offshore collector platform and connecting export cable for the offshore wind farm. This will involve working with Engineers to understand the root cause of any failures, the most appropriate reaction and implementing the solution both technically and commercially. Our client are seeking a highly skilled Offshore Wind Cable System (including all Transmission Interfaces: Terminations/Joints…) to join their team and play a key role in the specification, engineering design, testing, and installation of subsea power cables for our clients offshore wind farm. The successful candidate will work both on the EC (Export Cable) and IAC (Inter Array Cable) packages. More broadly this role will be expected to support or lead on a range of transmission system related matters: External interfaces - Strong knowledge about design inputs necessary to interfaces with all the other packages: GIS (switchgear), OSS/OSP (Offshore Sub Station), FOU (foundations) Internal interfaces - Inside the cable package with the T&I engineers to prevent failures. Installation is a particularly high cause of failures so contractor should bring insight on how to minimize this risk particularly from an electrical point of view: at termination and joints The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring development of robust cable designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and employer specific requirements, and check diligently that all testing activities (FAT during manufacture but also installation testing) of the cable system is reliable and ensure as much as possible that no failures will occur. The Offshore Sub Station Construction Coordinator will have oversight of all works on the platform and coordinate the construction activities during the HUC phase ensuring project processes are implemented and followed. This role ensures that all HUC activities are completed safely and efficiently, the Construction Coordinator serves as the primary link between those supervising and managing the HUC works and will identify SIMOPS and give clear project led priorities to the contractors.
