BOEM GREENLIGHTS US WIND'S 2GW MARYLAND OFFSHORE PROJECT
Industry NewsSource - reNews - BOEM approves US Wind construction plan
The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has officially approved US Wind’s Construction and Operations Plan (COP) for its groundbreaking offshore wind farm off the coast of Maryland, marking a major milestone in the project’s development.
This approval finalizes BOEM’s federal permitting process for the project, enabling US Wind to move forward with its vision to deliver up to 2GW of renewable energy to the region.
“This is a proud moment for US Wind,” said Jeff Grybowski, CEO of US Wind. “After more than four years of rigorous and robust analysis, we are thrilled to have secured this final BOEM approval. US Wind’s projects will produce massive amounts of homegrown energy and will help satisfy the region’s critical need for more electricity, all while supporting good local jobs."
BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein also highlighted the significance of the approval. “I am pleased to announce BOEM’s approval of our nation’s tenth commercial-scale offshore wind energy project. This project will power over 718,000 homes and support almost 2,680 jobs annually over seven years,” she stated.
A Two-Phase Vision for Maryland’s Energy Needs
The project comprises two key phases, MarWin and Momentum Wind, both of which have already secured offshore renewable energy certificates from the State of Maryland. Together, these phases will help bolster the region’s clean energy transition.
In November, the National Marine Fisheries Service granted a Letter of Authorization, further endorsing US Wind’s construction activities within the federal lease area off the coast of Ocean City, Maryland.
Innovative Infrastructure to Drive the Transition
The approved COP includes provisions for up to 114 wind turbines with a capacity of up to 18MW each, alongside up to four offshore substations and four export cables connecting the offshore site to the mainland. The export cables, essential for transmitting power, will be buried at depths between 3 and 13 feet to ensure minimal environmental impact and durability.
With this approval, US Wind is poised to lead a transformative step in the U.S. offshore wind industry, bringing renewable energy closer to millions while supporting local economic growth.
