Commercial Manager - Offshore (UK & Ireland)

The Commercial Manager will play a critical role in ensuring the commercial success of our client’s offshore wind projects. They will be responsible for leading on commercial aspects of projects in the portfolio, working in multidisciplinary teams to deliver profitable and sustainable growth.
 
Job Purpose
 
The Commercial Manager will support the competitive delivery of the offshore wind development pipeline:
  • Supporting development of investment cases for projects at a range of different stages in the Development and Delivery portfolio across UK and Ireland, including through leasing, route to market, through to FID
  • Enabling the best commercial decisions and value creating outcomes for our projects by leveraging their experience and engaging closely with key specialists and stakeholders across the business
  • Supporting on M&A opportunities to push forward the most commercially attractive proposals (acquisition or joint ventures) in line with the Offshore origination strategy
 
Framework & Boundaries
  • The Commercial Manager role is positioned in our client’s Offshore wind business unit, within the UK and Ireland Commercial Team, reporting to the Head of Commercial. The role will work closely with our client’s wider offshore team in Paris and worldwide, and with other UK and Ireland business unit and functional teams within a matrix delivery structure.
 
Key Accountabilities  
  • Business case development – Support development of investment cases for projects at a range of different stages in the UK and Ireland, including leasing, route to market and M&A opportunities through close collaboration with key project stakeholders. Support financial modelling team to evaluate and optimise project economics.
  • Commercial project management – Responsible for delivering commercial workstreams at development stage projects, including scope, timeline, budget, risks etc. Interfacing with key functions, including investments and valuations team, finance, legal, procurement and engineering teams as necessary. Engagement with consultants and external advisors
  • General commercial support – Provide commercial across the portfolio including supporting business case optimisation activities, commercial and contract negotiations, undertaking commercial analysis to support investment recommendations and decisions
  • Market and competitor intelligence – Gather and share market intelligence on competitors, supply chain, investors, markets and policy, with a focus on the UK and Ireland. Maintain general awareness of the international offshore wind landscape
  • Policy engagement – Support the UK and Ireland policy teams as needed to respond to key government and industry association consultations that impacts current or future offshore wind interests. Participate in industry associations as appropriate to represent offshore objectives
  • Process improvement – Ensure processes, templates, ways of working are documented and continually updated to drive a continuous improvement culture within the team based on lessons learnt
  • International bid support – Potential to provide support and/or peer review of commercial aspects of international offshore wind tenders and/or leasing processes
 
Job Dimensions
  • Budget management responsibilities: No P&L accountability, but responsible for designing and delivering budget efficiencies
  • Key contacts / relationships / stakeholders managed: Head of Development & Delivery, Investment Valuation & Analysis, Legal, Finance, Tax, M&A, Offshore Technical Centre, Asset Ops, Consents, Procurement, External (third party) Advisors, Comms & Marketing team
 
Person Specification
  • A degree in a numerate discipline, or commensurate experience
  • Strong understanding of the offshore wind industry, including technical knowledge of wind farm development and operation
  • Demonstrate strong experience in commercial roles:
  • Preferred types of experience: investment case development and appraisal, asset valuation, cost modelling, lease/CfD auction analysis and/or bid management
  • Experience that would also be highly advantageous: contract management and negotiation, offshore wind asset management, policy development and/or analysis (particularly offshore grid, CfD and supply chain development)
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary environment, coordinating with technical, legal, financial and investment teams, supplemented by engagement with external parties
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, be inquisitive and have a can-do attitude
 
Functional / Technical Skills
  • Project Economics – Strong understanding of project economics, key value drivers and valuation methodologies for renewable energy projects, ideally offshore wind
  • Project Management – Experience defining and managing commercial scopes, programmes, budgets, identifying potential risks to projects (financial, operational, market, regulatory, etc.) and developing strategies to mitigate them
  • Stakeholder Engagement – Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills
  • Communication – Strong communication and presentation skills, with experience delivering information at all levels including senior decision makers
  • Renewable Industry Awareness – An ability to understand renewable energy technologies and the enthusiasm to keep their knowledge up to date
  • Energy market knowledge – Sound understanding and experience of the market, policy and regulatory environment and route to market challenges for renewable generation and offshore wind in the UK and/or Ireland
  • Excellent IT skills – Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
