PORT OF BLYTH: 25 YEARS OF POWERING THE UK'S RENEWABLE ENERGY FUTURE!

The Port of Blyth, located in the North-East of England, is proudly celebrating 25 years of active involvement in the offshore wind sector. Since the turn of the millennium, the port has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the UK’s renewable energy industry, particularly in offshore wind power.

In 1993, the Port of Blyth became the site of the Blyth Harbour Wind Farm, the first wind farm in the UK located in a ‘Marine Environment.’ Featuring nine turbines on the East Pier, this landmark project marked the beginning of Blyth's contribution to the offshore wind sector and its ongoing support for the UK’s renewable energy transition.

As a key player in the UK's green energy revolution, the Port of Blyth continues to drive innovation and sustainability in the offshore wind industry.

Following the successful completion of the Blyth Harbour Windfarm, the Port of Blyth made history in the late 2000s with the installation of the UK’s first offshore wind turbines. The Blyth Offshore Demonstrator project featured cutting-edge 2MW Vestas wind turbines, placed 10 meters deep in the sea, with a rotor diameter of 66m. 
At the time, these turbines were the largest offshore wind turbines in the world.

This milestone cemented the Port of Blyth’s reputation as a leading hub for renewable energy, marking a key moment in the UK’s offshore wind industry. The port continues to be at the forefront of offshore wind power innovation, supporting the country’s transition to sustainable, clean energy.

The Port of Blyth plays a key role in the mobilisation and construction of offshore wind farms while also supporting the growth of the clean energy sector and its workforce. As a player in the renewable energy industry, the port is home to the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult Innovation and Research Centre and the state-of-the-art £1M Wind Turbine Training Facility.
This advanced training facility features a full-sized, specially modified wind turbine, offering unparalleled, high-quality training opportunities for workers in the offshore wind and renewable energy sectors. The Port of Blyth’s commitment to workforce development and innovation continues to drive the growth of the UK’s clean energy industry.

In 2024, the Port of Blyth achieved GWO accreditation and entered into a strategic partnership with The Wind Academy, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to the growing offshore wind industry. The port also launched its Energy Central Learning Hub, a state-of-the-art STEM education centre offering a wide range of industrial training tailored to the renewable energy sector.

This hub includes a clean energy-focused visitor centre, providing an immersive learning experience designed to inspire and educate the community. By offering hands-on training and educational resources, the Port of Blyth is helping to equip the next generation of workers with the skills needed to build successful careers in offshore wind and clean energy.
